The one day it actually snows and my mother lives 100miles away (and in the mountains not less). So today's present (I have a stack here that need to go) exchange and foods will not be had. I made a requested batch of brownies to bring along with a few set aside separately for the person, my stepfather, who requested them. So even if it stops snowing here, who knows what it'll be there, in the mountains and 2 hours drive away. *Grrr!
So all of the scarves I made are still here.......

So with not much else to do, well clean the house, laundry, blah, blah, blah, but who wants to do that? I will behave and put more things away. Presents are still coming out of their boxes. And the kids portable DVD players are fun too. I just may get to some stitching today.
My want to do pile is calling. And I have to get cracking on that secret project (sorry Tracy, I know I am late, but, holidays are that).

It's... Alive!
Yeah I am still here. The kids have been home since last Friday and they don't go back to school until Tuesday. So I had spent a great deal of time with Legos, flashcards and new DVDs (I have tried to watch Cars, twice, unsuccessfully.)
Our holiday, nearly complete, was relaxing and fun. Lots of good food and fun to be had. I won't bore you with details!
I found the right skein of yarn at Joann's when I had struck of on our little field trip. Right dye lot and all. I was so relieved about that part. But ugly at myself for loading up the van with the kids and necessary errand running things to get to the store and realize I had forgotten my store coupon. Yarn at full price, ugh. But I figured that while there buying the Parrot skein, and knowing I wouldn't use more than a couple of rows from it to finish J.'s scarf -I would pick up another color to try my hand at stripes. I just love the Parrot, and thought black stripes would look really cool with it. My (heavy winter) coat is brown and green. I typically dress rather simply. You know, black leather purse, nothing that stands out. But I thought a little splash of color around my neck isn't too odd. Right? I am not sure exactly what I will do as far as the striping. (That's where you all come in! HELP!)
Another knitting question, just what is the "typical" length of a scarf? Is there some mathematical way to figure it out? Say, based on the person's height?
A Stash browsing we go......
I popped into AC Moore to see about some frames for gifts and just "had" to peek in the cross stitch area. It was surprising. They had discounted stacks of fabrics (nothing I want or need right now) to as little at around 85¢! A bunch of kits are gone, as are a bunch of other things too. I aked what was going on.(The lady was standing right there moving things around. She answered in such a nasty tone.) Looks as though they are downsizing the cross stitch area. I felt a little sad, but seeing as I can find so much online I know I will be okay.
The score for the trip:
Mill Hill Treasures! They were marked waaaay down. Ranging from about 55¢ or so to around 85¢. I grabbed all I could hold at that moment. I just love those things.... Plus I managed to grab some I don't have and I really think I will use. Plus whatever I don't will end up in someone's secret pal exchange envelope anyways.
Plus I want to make one of those double pin marker things.....

dye lot
Today boys and girls we are going to learn about dye lot.
Why? You may ask......
Because your teacher (me) decided there was plenty left on the 2nd skein to do "Just one last row", and, "Of course there is plenty to bind off with!" Wrong!
So today, we will be taking a(n unplanned) field trip to go and buy a (hopefully matching) skein of Bernat Boa Parrot to finish J.'s scarf with.
See? Lesson learned the hard (and inconvenient) way!
Let's hope Joann's stocks it because there is a house to vaccuum, and holiday wrapping to be done on this shortened school day.
So hands to yourself and load up the bus quickly and quietly!

Hm, I seem to get an unbelievable craving for pie this time of year. And the hearty homemade soups and stews. Yum.

Hm, not sure, not as many as we could have I suppose. And if McD counts, maybe 1 or 2?
4. Do you drink anything different in your coffee this time of year? (flavorings,etc)
Not normally, but the gingerbread one at one of the places (Dunkin' Donuts maybe?) sounds awful good. May have to see about trying it.
5. Can you ice skate?
I can but haven't in years.
6. How bad does it hurt when you sled?
Bad, but man I can get that sled going so fast now! (weight = momentum)
7. Would you rather freezing rain and ice -or- big fat snowflakes with a howling wind?
Snow by far. It's easier to drive in, less likely to lose power and it looks prettier!
8. What do you stock (keep on hand) for winter vegetables?
Normally carrots and potato. Hubby likes to get rutabagas and what not, but more with specific "will be on the menu shortly" plans.
9. What do your pets think of the change in weather?
Not much, Chris E, liked watching the snow the other day (we haven't had much of the white stuff yet). Other than that, not much is different for them.

Technically yes, but our room is one of the warmest in the house so it's a bit unneccessary. But I do go to the comforter again.

Oh yes. And the food is unbeatable. Especially when it's not me standing by the grill!
13. Anything you miss?
Yes the sun.
14. Do you go out as much on the weekends?
Um, nope. Summer is much busier.

yes, the freak that I am , I do. Great exercise. Stress Reliever,just when I need to clear my head I can grab my coat and head out to the quiet.When else can I be outdoors and not see a single (biting) insect?
18. Do you own a roof rake?
yup, and it comical to see me hoist it up without killing myself.
19. Do you eat ice cream in the winter?
Oh yes I do! I find ice cream to be a year round experience.

Insulated water resistant gloves.

sick again
Okay, my voice came back Monday from the last bout I had. Yesterday (Thursday) I had a killer headache and really sore throat. Last night and today, it's sneeze city with the whole runny face , sore throat and aches.I think this is my 4th round since school started, possibly my fifth.
So what is it? Maybe using the hand sanitizer isn't working for me when I am out and about. *sigh. And I wash my hands all the time, blah blah. *cough, Yuck.
Fingerscrossed for me that this goes away quickly.

Hardly as delicious as the previous pics (*waving to Val), but I have been knitting until my arms ache and my eyes cross. I am making lots and lots of progress!
Finished:
Yarn- "Blue Bird", Bernat Boa, for my eldest niece, A.
It started as this and is now this- taken from standing on a chair to get the whole thing in, and with a closer shot.

"Lovebird", also Bernat Boa, a skein and a third so far.... for my niece M which is working out very nicely. It's creating this sort of (unintentional) pattern that looks so cool. Who would have known!
I am making this one shorter, she is 4 yrs old and I don't want her tripping over it. I think 2 skeins will do for this one as well. Though, I have tossed around the idea of a supermini Barbie sized scarf for the Barbie (who came with other outfits) I bought as the rest of her Christmas gift.

Holidays.... 'n stuff
My Dad and Stepmother came over today for a couple of hours. It was a nice visit! We exchanged presents and got to sit, relax and catch up. Silly of me though. Here we are nearing Christmas at a fast rate and I haven't put up the tree yet or brought out the winter decorations. Yes, the artificial autumn colored flowers are still out. Whoopsie! But the house is looking better (aka, getting rid of stuff) so I guess this is sort of "the process".
This week, the goal is Christmas shopping. So here is my brain organizing itself-

I only ordered a small packet of those *cough $$$

Feeling Grinch-y
Well not really. But I am really starting to get in the mood for the holiday.
After hours of running around doing errands
-My daughter has a new pair of boots.
-Both of the kids have dress shoes. Which in itself was funny with me in the boys section trying on shoes. My son has feet nearly as big as mine, and he's 8! But it is handy to buy him shoes without him having to be around.
-Grocery shopping is done for a few days anyways
-and one more gift done for my daughter
-Ideas a brewing for my Dad (*yoo-hoo, in case you're reading this Dad, I won't go on.)
All in all, a good day.
And it looks as though while I was gone they tried to deliver my Strawberry Shortcake. Grrrr. I missed it! I will have to call the post office tomorrow and be sure they will try again. Otherwise I will have to make a trip (10 miles or so one way) to the post office to get it. Ironic eh? I am closer to the neighboring town's office.
But not to waste the trip if I do have to make it. I can always pick up a couple of items on my "to get" list for holiday shopping in that area anyways. Lemons into lemonade.

Design: "Hoppy Birthday" freebie by Brookesbooks
Stitch Size: 40 stitches high x 34 stitches wide (quarter for scale)
Fabric: 28ct white Monaco, stitched over one
tweekings due to stash on hand and to make it suit the Christmas theme to go with the exchange-
>I used green instead of brown for the shading along the arm (stash on hand=didn't have that color) and backstitching (instead of the same brown and black)
>the present I had to change completely to make it look Christmas-like. I went with all red -cotton and Light effect. When I started to stripe with green & red thought it competed with the green of the frog.
>The hat I omitted completely, I felt it would have made it more of New Year's style, and with lack of time to fully change it to a more Christmas style -leaving it off just made sense.
This was finished with double slided tape and mounted on a card I made from cardmaking things I had on hand. I used the same LE red to tie the bow at the bottom.

I haven't been on much since I have had this "thing". But, I was able to sleep most of last night so am starting to feel much better now. Over the last few days I have been jumping on and off in very small doses to check my Paypal/eBay situation, and very briefly mail and usergroups. Blogs I have checked and rarely responded to in the same sitting. My head and body were screaming.
On stash goodness- I have received word (from one of the best eBay sellers I have ever had so far) that Strawberry Shortcake is on the way to me. This is the first time I have ever used my Paypal account -I could very easily fall in love with it I think. Not having to run to the bank was a huge relief to me (esp with how I have been feeling) and being able to check on everything by PC was quite convenient. Not to mention I LOVE tracking numbers! I will be checking it at least ten times a day now. And I already know the whole "watched pot never boils thing", but I just can't help it!
Another, can't wait- seeing when my recipient gets her goodies from the EMS Secret Pal Exchange. Then I can finally post my latest stiching! It'll be new for those who have escaped my IM files. ;)
